Even though I started using baby sign language out of curiosity, I am glad that I did as Immy was not ready to communicate verbally with us until very recently. I am sure that these signs have saved us more than a few frustrated tantrums as they have allowed her to communicate non-verbally before she had the words to actually say.
I've just started baby sign language with my daughter. She is 5 1/2 months. I signed with my son when he was about this age, then went back to work, got busy and didn't see much result, so I gave up on it...THEN, when he was about a year old, he started making signs that I hadn't used more than a few times when he was just itty bitty. It was amazing! He consistently used about 10-15 signs until he was able to talk well. He's just over 2 now Last weekend we went to a parade. He was SO excited about the parade and overcome that he was a loss for words. The first marching band and float were one thing, but when he saw that there was MORE to the parade than just that, he began FURIOUSLY signing "more" over and over and over! After my experience with him, I am very motivated to continue this with his sister.

I would love to give this a shot with my daughter, I had no idea you could start it so early. There are definitely times that she looks at me and I just wish I could understand what she was trying to say!

When I got my book in the mail, I was so excited to read up and start this with Chandler. I was worried that he would be to young since he just turned a year old. Come to find out though, you can start as young as 6 months and as late as 30 months. It is truly amazing, we are still working on the first stage but I feel that he will be doing this in no time. The book consist of 5 stages total, and each stage has 12 new signs and you teach your child based on his or her age. This will work out great not only at home but as well as preschool. I highly recommend this book to all parents/grandparents out there that want to be able to talk to their little one.

It’s become known that babies are receptive to learning sign language long before they can speak. I think it’s terrific that there are parents teaching their children signing early on. I really like that the book offers a simple, clear color picture of a sign being made as well as a brief written description of how to make it. I also appreciated the picture index of all signs at the back of the book, listed in alphabetical order for quick reference.

The book offers a number of reasons why you should use sign language with your child including facilitation of communication at a young age, bonding, improved social skills, stimulation of the mind and use of body language. Those are all valid reasons but I’d like to offer two more. One - If you wait for your child to develop and speak according to a typical timeline and they don’t then you’ve wasted a lot of precious time that you could have spent teaching and learning alternate communication skills. Two. The comprehension and use of simple signs is more than just a way for children to make themselves understood. It’s also a way for children to understand others who cannot communicate.

The thing I really like about this book is that they reinforce the fact that each child will do these signs differently (which isn't necessarily important), because what is important is the understanding between the child and parent, not that they are doing them perfectly. The main idea is that the parent is able to understand what the child wants and teaching them basic signs for main things children will require and want at this age is an amazing way to communicate with your baby/toddler.

What I liked about this comprehensive book is that it is chock-full of beautiful photos and illustrations, along with an index in the back of the book.

This all-inclusive book includes answers and FAQ such as why you should teach your toddler to sign; when you should begin teaching and what makes this book unique compared to similar books of it’s genre.

If you’re a parent, pre-school teacher or daycare provider, this is one reference book you should read, implement and keep at-the ready on your bookshelf.
I thoroughly enjoyed trying this with my son – combined with his few verbal words, he now signs for bath, a drink, where and more which has eased a lot of our stressful times. I would have loved to have had this book sooner, as you can begin signing as early as 6 months, so I could have enjoyed the benefits sooner. It is a wonderful bond to know that your non-verbal baby is telling you something and you are understanding them.

I wish I would have had the toddler interpreter earlier on because it would have been nice to start teaching him even earlier. I recommend this book to all parent’s with babies/toddlers. I was amazed at how quickly he picked up the signs.
