Baby Sign Language goes International
As this is our very first blog post for Toddler Interpreter Baby Sign Language, I thought it would be fitting to describe our journey and how we came to be. If you follow us on Facebook or Twitter (BabySigns), you will know that we are signing with our precious little baby Scarlette Ella. Before she was born we had already decided to teach her Baby Sign Language to communicate with us before she could speak.
Sign Language for Disabled and Hearing Children and Adults
Ian, co-author of Toddler Interpreter, has worked for 7 years teaching Sign Language to severley disabled adults and children. Most of whom have suffered from extreme cases of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Downs Syndrome. The sign language used with non-verbal hearing children and adults needs to be modified somewhat to gesticulate the meaning of a word, much the same as what you would need to do for a child. This naturally lead to an investigation into Baby Sign Language as the concept is very similar. Upon investigation into the Baby Sign Language resources available at the time, it was obvious that most were based on the language of the deaf. He was concerned that this would make it too difficult for other parents to realize the benefits of signing with their baby as the fingerspelling and complex handshapes used are beyond the capabilities of a 6 month old baby.
International or Universal Baby Sign Language
There are over 160 different sign languages used throughout the world today. The main cause for variation is in the fingerspelling of the alphabet, which can often differ even from state to state of the same country. So, if Baby Sign Language is based on gesticulation rather than a fingerspelled alphabet, there is no longer any limitation to the localization of its use. It is our aim at Toddler Interpreter to provide the first truely Universal Baby Sign Language.
People may be concerned that we have made up a whole new language, well thats not the case at all. We have brought together all of the Baby Signs that are most commonly in use, analysed and researched trends and success rates, modified where necessary and pulled together the Baby Signs that best reflect the gesture or meaning of the word.
