Baby Sign Language from a Dad’s Perspective
It has been 7 years using sign language for me, and I’ve had some amazing experiences with the children and adults I have worked with and supported. Nothing comes close to the joy I felt when I saw my little girl understand the Baby Sign Language gesture for ‘milk’. She is just 6 months old, and I watched her very closely grow from a fragile, tiny baby to a healthy little girl starting to crawl, giggle and give Daddy big cuddles. It’s such a great feeling when I get home from work, walk in the door and receive a big smile from my little baby girl. Her eyes light up and her arms out stretch for her afternoon Daddy cuddle. After a little play, and of course a kiss for my beautiful partner, I use the Baby Sign Language for ‘milk’, little Scarlette’s eyes widen, she moves her little fingers and grins from ear to ear. As I walk over to the bottle warmer, she leans forward toward the bottle trying to get a hold of it. Her understanding of Baby Sign Language is very obvious and exciting to me.
In my line of work as a disability support worker I use Sign Language all day. I alter my signing to Baby Sign Language when I get home and start communicating with Scarlette. Using Baby Sign Language has become habit for my partner and I now. In the next few weeks we are expecting our little girl to start using Baby Sign Language for ‘Mommy’ and ‘Daddy’. In my baby diary in our copy of the Toddler Interpreter Baby Sign Language “How To” Guide, I have noted that my little girl’s first word was ‘Milk’. It’s not a verbal word but it’s very clear to me that she understands what we are talking about, that is so exciting.
The bond between a Dad and his babies is a very important part of families dynamic. To strengthen that bond from a very early age using Baby Sign Language is crucial for me. My 6 month old little angel understands me, and I understand her. That bond will only get stronger as the months and years progress. The journey of fatherhood is the most exciting thing I have ever done, and look forward to every dirty diaper I get to change, every bath time and every bottle I feed to her. This opportunity I may never get again and saver every possible moment. I can’t wait to tell everyone about our Baby Sign Language progress and the next Baby Sign we use together.
